Google Maps often promises about 5 hours. Real trips run longer. Between the Ghaziabad exit, the Moradabad bypass and the slow approach into Kashipur, 5.5 to 6.5 hours with two breaks is a fair expectation. Add an hour on weekends and long weekends.

Tolls, FASTag and the Uttarakhand green cess

Expect several toll plazas on NH9 and the approach roads. A car usually pays somewhere around ₹400 to ₹500 each way in total. Toll rates are revised every April and depend on your exact pickup point, so treat that as a guide and not a quote.

Uttarakhand has also announced a green cess on vehicles from other states, collected through FASTag and number plate cameras. The rate announced for a four-wheeler was ₹40 per day of entry, with electric and CNG vehicles listed as exempt. The rollout has been staged, so ask your operator whether it applies on your travel date.

When the road slows down

• December and January: dense fog on NH9 before 8 AM. Ask for a later pickup instead of driving blind.
• November (Kartik Purnima): the Ganga fair at Garhmukteshwar and the festival crowd at Garjiya Devi temple both add hours.
• July and August (Sawan): Kanwar traffic often brings diversions around Hapur and Garhmukteshwar.
• Weekends: Moradabad and Kashipur are slowest on Friday evening and Sunday afternoon.

Best Time to Visit Jim Corbett in the 2026–27 Season

Corbett is not open everywhere all year. Zone dates below come from the park’s own rate table, and the park can shift them with weather.

For a first trip, we point people to mid-November through early March. The mornings are cold, so carry a proper jacket for the open jeep, but the drive from Delhi is comfortable and every zone is open.

2026–27 booking update

The park has been updating its booking process for the new season. For example, day-visit bookings for Dhela, Jhirna and Garjiya for 15 to 27 October 2026 opened online on 12 September 2026, and other dates continue under the older system. Read the notice on the official Corbett site before you plan your dates.

Jim Corbett Safari Booking 2026: Zones, Permits and Rules

Book the safari first. The cab, the hotel and even your leave dates can move but a sold-out permit cannot.

Permits are issued only by Corbett Tiger Reserve through its official portal (eCorbett). If you get stuck, the reserve’s helpline is 1800 309 6260.

Day safari charges for Indian nationals (per gypsy, per safari)

• The charge is per gypsy, not per head. A gypsy takes up to six people, including up to two children under 12, so a full vehicle splits ₹7,000-plus six ways.
• Foreign nationals: the permit is ₹6,680. If even one guest is a foreign national, foreign rates apply to everyone on that permit. OCI card holders and SAARC nationals pay Indian rates.
• Discounts: Indian senior citizens get ₹250 off per person. Indian students aged 12 to 18 get ₹375 off per person. Carry valid ID for both.

Dhikala: Canter or night stay only

Dhikala does not offer day-visit jeep permits. You get in by a shared Canter (a 16-seat bus) or by booking a night in the forest rest house. The Canter runs 15 November to 15 June, costs ₹1,500 per seat plus 18% GST for Indian nationals, and boards from the Ramnagar Corbett office or Dhangarhi gate. It does not wait for latecomers and cannot be rescheduled.

Booking rules that catch people out

• Permits open up to 45 days ahead, and availability appears progressively each day. Put a reminder on your phone.
• Enter names and ID details exactly as on your original ID. It is checked at the gate.
• Payment needs a WhatsApp-enabled mobile number for OTP. You receive a ticket with a QR code.
• Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable once paid.
• A gypsy is allotted automatically. You can request a specific one within 8 hours of booking.
• Children under 12 do not need a permit.
• Only authorised gypsies and guides go inside the reserve. Your cab stays outside, so confirm the gypsy pickup point with your stay.

A last check on the zone list: Jhirna and Dhela run all year, Bijrani and Garjiya run 15 October to 30 June, and Durgadevi, Sonanadi and Pakhro run 15 November to 15 June. Sonanadi and Pakhro sit farther from Ramnagar and suit a three-day trip better than this one.

Day 1: Delhi to Ramnagar by Cab and an Afternoon Safari

The whole plan hangs on one thing: reaching Ramnagar by about 1:30 PM. That gives you time to check in, eat and be ready when the gypsy arrives.

Afternoon safaris usually run from about 2:30 to 5:30 PM, though the exact entry time is printed on your permit and changes with the season. Gates are strict.

Tip from the road

We would rather you skip a sit-down lunch at Kashipur than miss the gate. Buy something to eat in the car if you are running late.

If you cannot reach Ramnagar by 1:30 PM, do not chase the safari. Shift your permit plans to Day 2 morning and spend Day 1 afternoon at Garjiya Devi temple and the Kosi riverbank.

Day 2: Morning Safari, Garjiya Devi Temple and the Drive Back to Delhi

Wear muted greens, browns and khaki. Skip perfume. Keep your voice low once the gypsy enters the forest, because most sightings start with somebody noticing something quiet.

Garjiya Devi temple sits on a large rock in the middle of the Kosi River. You climb a steep flight of steps to reach it, so go easy with elderly parents. Darshan hours are usually around 6 AM to 12 noon and 4 to 8 PM. Check locally on festival days.

If you have time to spare

The Corbett Museum at Kaladhungi is Jim Corbett’s former winter home, built in 1922 and turned into a museum in 1965. It is roughly 30 km from Ramnagar and adds one to one and a half hours to your day. Corbett Falls lies in the same direction.

If you add the museum and falls, leave Ramnagar by about 3 PM and expect to reach Delhi by 9 to 9:30 PM. Confirm museum timings and holiday closures before you go.

What If You Can’t Get a Safari Permit?

It happens, mostly on winter weekends and around New Year. No safari can promise a tiger either. Corbett has one of the largest tiger populations in the country, but the forest is thick and the cats are shy.

• Check the Cancelled Permits page on the official Corbett site in the days before travel. Released seats show up there.
• Look at different zones and different days. A sold-out Bijrani does not always mean a sold-out Jhirna.
• Try the Dhikala Canter or a forest rest house night stay if you can plan further ahead.
• If you get nothing, keep the trip. The Garjiya temple, Kosi riverbank, Corbett Falls, the Dhangarhi museum and the official Butterfly Park and Interpretation Centre still make a full weekend, and birdwatching around Ramnagar is worthwhile.

Where to Stay Near Jim Corbett: Ramnagar, Garjiya and Forest Rest Houses

You are not choosing a fancy resort for two nights. You are choosing a place that gets you to the gate on time.

• Ramnagar town: best for a short stay. Closest to the main gates and easiest for cab drop and pickup.
• Garjiya (Kosi riverside): quieter and greener, on the Ranikhet road. Good if you want a slower evening.

Forest rest house night stay

If you want to sleep inside the reserve, the forest rest houses are open 15 November to 14 June. A room for two Indian guests runs about ₹3,500 to ₹5,050 per night, plus a vehicle and driver charge of about ₹5,750 to ₹7,750 and a ₹1,000 guide charge. The stay includes two jeep safaris.

Bookings open up to 45 days ahead, with new slots released on Mondays at 10:00 AM. Non-vegetarian food, alcohol and firecrackers are prohibited, and vehicles cannot move at night. Some rest houses have no canteen, so you may need to carry rations.

How Much a 2 Day Delhi to Corbett Trip Costs

Here is a realistic budget for a group of four travelling on a Saturday and Sunday in winter, with two safaris and one night in a mid-range stay.
