Ahmedabad to Palitana is the very popular route for pilgrimage, specially for Jain pilgrims. Palitana is known as "City of Temples" and is the only mountain in world that has more than 900 temples.
The entire Shatrunjaya Hill is sacred as per Jain scriptures. It is dotted with more than 3000 white marble temples grouped into tunks and is built be generations of Jains over a period of 1000 years from 11th centuary onwards. These temples depict architectural brilliance and are a visual treat. The main temple on top of the hill is dedicated to the first Tirthankar Rishabhdev, better known as Adinath who is believed to be meditated here. There are 3800 stone steps from the foot of the hill to top. For those who are unable to climb, sling-chairs are readily available. Food must neither be eaten nor carried on the way. Palitana became the first city in the world to be legally vegetarian in 2014. Buying and selling of meat, fish and eggs and also related jobs or work fishing are illegal here. Palitana also offer glimpses of harmony between the Hindu and the Muslim community which is evident at the Muslim shrine Angar Pir. Many women prayer here to get blessed with children. A festival is celebrated for the slaying of demons by Shiva, on Kartik Purnima. Thousands of pilgrims and tourists take part in this festival.
