This guide is about the 2026 dates, the parade , and what most guides skip: how to get to Mysuru and explore around without feeling overwhelmed or stressed.

Most calendars show Dussehra on October 20. Mysuru uses its own religious calendar, so Vijayadashami and the procession are on the 21st. Things change, so check Karnataka Tourism or the district office before you go.

The History Behind Mysuru Dasara

This festival started from the Navaratri events during the Vijayanagara empire. Raja Wodeyar I officially started it in Srirangapatna back in 1610. The Wodeyar family moved it to Mysuru later. It has been happening for over 400 years and is now Karnataka's state festival.

The royal family still does the old rituals inside the palace. Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wodeyar leads it now.

What Is the Jamboo Savari? Route, Howdah and Timings

Jamboo Savari
Jamboo Savari

The Jamboo Savari marks the end of Dasara on Vijayadashami. A lead elephant carries a statue of Goddess Chamundeshwari in a 750 kg gold howdah. More elephants, dancers, police bands, and floats from across Karnataka follow.

The Chief Minister starts it with a puja to the Nandi Dhwaja. The procession then leaves the Mysuru Palace grounds and goes about 5 km to Bannimantap, where they honor the banni tree.

The elephants are used to this. The Dasara elephant squad gets a special welcome (Gajapooje) at the palace on August 26 and practices for weeks.

Best Places to Watch the Jamboo Savari

The spots closest to the palace get crowded early. Palace ground seats are few and sold officially. Look out for ticketing information early.

Further down the route, places away from the palace are less crowded and give you a better, longer view of the floats. Bannimantap is good if you want to see the Torchlight Parade after the main event.

Other Dasara Highlights Worth Planning Around

  • Mysuru Palace lit by nearly one lakh bulbs each evening
  • Cultural programmes with music and dance through the ten nights
  • The Dasara exhibition and food stalls near the city centre
  • Chamundi Hill temple, best visited early morning on non-procession days
  • Day trips to Srirangapatna, Somanathapura and Brindavan Gardens

Taxi Booking for Mysuru Dasara: One-Way Taxi or Round-Trip Cab?

Mysuru is about 145 km from Bengaluru, a three to three-and-a-half hour drive. During Dasara weekends, it takes longer. Trains and buses get booked up weeks in advance. Parking near the palace is a pain.

A pre-booked cab can sort out most of these issues. It picks you up from your place, waits until you're ready to go, and has room for family and your stuff.

  • A one-way taxi from Mysuru is good if you're catching a train or going to Coorg or Ooty.
  • Going for a round-trip means the driver sticks with you the whole time, good for a single-day trip or a two to three-day stay with local touring.
  • Airport transfers are also an option. Most people fly into Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport, a four-hour drive from Mysuru.

For Dasara, October 19th to 21st, you really need to book your cab two to three weeks ahead. The main roads in Mysuru get rerouted on procession day. So, tell your driver to plan a drop-off point outside the restricted zone and sort out a pickup spot for your return.
