Most festivals allow a little flexibility but its not same with Chhath puja. The vrat is sun-dependent and once the sun sets, the ghat gets full early and the family reaching even an hour late to the ghat will lose out on Arghya completely.
That is why your travel arrangements for the return trip are equally important as the puja itself. Here's a travel checklist for your return trip that includes dates, pickup timings, your baggage, vehicle selection and booking decisions, which are likely to make the most significant difference when thousands of families travel to Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand in the same week.

Chhath Puja 2026 Dates and Arghya Timings to Plan Around
Chhath Puja 2026 runs for four days in the Kartik month.
| Day | Ritual | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Nahay Khay | Friday, 13 November 2026 |
| Day 2 | Kharna | Saturday, 14 November 2026 |
| Day 3 | Sandhya Arghya (evening offering) | Sunday, 15 November 2026 |
| Day 4 | Usha Arghya (morning offering) | Monday, 16 November 2026 |

Sunset on the main day is around 5:30 PM in Delhi and earlier in Bihar and Jharkhand region. Sunrise on the final morning is around 6:45 AM in Delhi and much earlier in the eastern part of the country. So for this people head to the ghat early in the morning when its too dark, before first light. The exact timings vary by city, and some panchangs have the different festival day.
Why Cab Booking Works Better Than Chasing Train Tickets
Chhath special trains run by railway sell out in minutes and flights to Patna, Gaya, Darbhanga, Varanasi and Ranchi are booked weeks in advance before festival week. Many families traveling with elders, kids, and puja samaan hate the hassle at the station.
A pre-booked taxi fixes most of such problems. The car picks you up right at your door, waits for everyone, takes the heavy bags without strict weight limits and drops you straight at the destination. Booking early locks your spot very fast and increase chances of smoother travel. The tickets vanish fast after Diwali until November 12 and during the mid-November rush as well.
One-Way Taxi or Round-Trip Cab: Which Suits the Family?
The right choice depends on how long the family stays.
One-way taxi: A one way cab is best in case family members go back to their city on vacation and come back through another route. You will only pay for the distance actually traveled. It is the default pick for routes like Delhi to Patna, Lucknow to Gorakhpur or Kolkata to Ranchi.

Round-trip cab: If you're all going back together in a round-trip cab, or if you want your driver to have him waiting while you go to the ghat, shop, and friends' homes, and then have him return with you, booking round-trip makes a lot of sense. Your return date is set from the moment you book, which comes in handy when every single return seat on other transport is completely taken.
A good rule of thumb is that if your return date is locked in, a round-trip cab is usually cheaper. If your plans are still up in the air, book a one-way trip twice and keep your return wide open.
Pickup Planning: Home, Airport and Railway Station Transfers
Good pickups start with good details. Share these at the time of booking:
Exact pickup address with a landmark, not just the locality
- Number of passengers, including children and elders
- Number of bags, and whether any item is oversized
- Flight or train number for airport and railway station pickups, so the driver can track delays
- A second contact number from the family
For outstation trips starting from home, request the driver to reach 20-30 minutes early. Loading puja material takes more time than ordinary luggage.
Book a Patna airport transfer or railway station pickup at Patna Junction, Danapur or Gaya in advance and be sure about the pickup gate. Near stations during festivals, traffic can be heavy, and a defined meeting point prevents a prolonged wait with hungry children.
Timing: When to Leave and When to Reach
Road distances are long and in November there is winter fog on highway portions early morning. As a generic benchmark, Delhi-Patna drive is 16-18 hours, Delhi-Varanasi 12-14 hours, and Lucknow-Patna 9-10 hours. The road journey can be longer in non-vehicular areas and due to fog and festival season rush.
A few timing rules that save trouble:
- You should reach home by Nahay Khay or earlier. House work is completed and ready before the first day of the vrat, and vrati needs rest before Kharna.
- Don't go off into the fog at 4am. A day time leave and night stop over will be much safer than having to negotiate low visibility.
- Anticipate road closures and vehicles ban in vicinity of all major ghats on Arghya days. Walk the final mile if required.
- Never take a long drive on the same morning of Usha Arghya. The family has to be at the ghat, not on the highway.
- For the return, consider 17 or 18 November if possible. 16th afternoon is the most crowded period.

The Luggage Checklist for Chhath: Prasad, Soop and Sugarcane
The Chhath Puja festival luggage is entirely different. Offerings are huge, fragile and need to be kept clean.
- Soop and daura (bamboo trays and baskets): These are layed flat, cover them and place them on top
- Thekua and prasad ingredients: Store in airtight, leakproof containers, away from pungent-smelling foods.
- Sugarcane stalks: Long and difficult to carry, so the cab driver might have to move them so tell him before starting. Lots of families purchase sugarcane close to the ghat to avoid such problem.
- Fruits, Coconut and Kalash Wrap individually so that nothing get bruised while traveling.
- It's quite cold in the ghat mornings and it gets colder when you are standing in water.
- Medications: Particularly to the fasting believer and elder household members.
- Some documents and proof of ID: Keep one photo ID for every adult.
Make sure to keep pack puja items in a separate bag from shoes, laundry and general baggage.
Choosing the Right Cab for Your Family Size
The vehicle matters more than most people expect, because the boot space fills quickly.
- Sedan: suits two to four people with moderate luggage
- SUV or MUV: the comfortable choice for five to seven people and extra bags
- Larger vehicles: better for joint families travelling together with full puja material
Availability varies by route and date, and the larger vehicles go first in festival week.
What Decides the Cost of an Outstation Cab
No one likes a surprise at the end of a long drive. Before confirming any outstation cab, check what the quoted amount covers:
- Toll charges and parking
- State entry taxes where the route crosses a border
- Driver night allowance on multi-day trips
- Waiting time during the stay
- Distance limits for round trips
CabBazar does not run seasonal offers or short-lived discounts. The belief behind the brand is simpler: the lowest possible rate for every customer, every day, backed by a decade of outstation experience and the trust of millions of travellers. A festival rush does not change how the quote is explained, and the same clear terms apply to everyone.
