Guwahati is situated in the state of Assam, sandwiched by the Brahmaputra river on one side and the Shillong on the other side. Formerly it was known as Pragiyotishpura. The present name of town is union of two Assamese words โGuwaโ means Areca Nut and Haat means market. Main attraction of the town is Kamakhya temple, located at the top of the Nilachal Hill and dedicated to Goddess Kamakhya. Lakhs of devotees visit the temple during Ambubachi Mela each year. Umananda and Navagraha are other sacred temples in the city. Guwahati also houses eminent educational institutes like Indian Institute of Guwahati (IITG) and Guwahati Medical College (GMC) in the fields of engineering and medicine respectively. Another important attraction for tourists is cruise on the River Brahmaputra that provides an excellent view of sunrise and sunset, a trip to the Umananda temple, Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra and Assam State Museum.
