Located on the banks of Godavari river, Basara is the holy town named after Maharishi Vyasa and called Vasar or Basar or Basara. It is believed that Maharishi Veda Vyasa chose this place for his peaceful adobe and created idols Goddess Lakshmi, Kali and Saraswati with sand and used to do prayers after taking bath in holy river Godavari. Other major attraction in Basara is Shiva temple which is situated on bank of Godavari river. Basara is even more blissful and mesmerising during festivals of Maha Shivratri, Navratri (Devi Navarathrulu) and Vasant Panchami. Children perform a learning ceremony here before starting formal school education. It is called "Akshara Abhyasam". The city is also home to Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies which is a state university offering various technology programmes.
