The town gained fame in South India after the fort was built here. Vanaji Pandithar, who worked for Thanjavur Maratha ruler Shahuji I, built this fort in 1686–87. Pattukkottai's recorded history starts from the 17th century. The Thanjavur Marathas first ruled Pattukkottai, followed by the British. Today, Pattukkottai is the center of Pattukkottai taluk in Thanjavur and is one of two municipalities in the district. The town is part of the Pattukkottai assembly constituency, which selects a member for the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly every five years. It also falls under the Thanjavur Lok Sabha constituency, which elects a Member of Parliament every five years. An old inscription says Vanaji Pandithar built the fort under the rule of Shahuji I. The Thanjavur Marathas ruled Pattukkottai until 1799 when the British East India Company took over. In 1801, it became part of Tanjore district.
