It is believed that the temple was originally built after a dream which led Raja Vishnu Das to travel from Ayodhya to discover Shiva Linga in jungles of Tarakeswar. Raja Bharamalla Rao built the present structure of temple in 1729 AD. The Taraknath Temple is visited by pilgrims throughout the year, particularly on Mondays. On the occasion of Shravani Mela (Srabon on the Bengali Calendar), and Gajan, thousands of pilgrims visit Tarakeswar. This temple has been rebuilt and repaired many times. The Dudhpukur pond, located to the north of the temple, is believed to be able to answer the prayers of those who take a dip there. It is also considered one of the Jyotirlinga temples of Mahadev. Nearly 10 million devotees travel from different parts of India each year to bring the holy water of Ganga to Lord Shiva. They do this by bringing it from Nimai Tirtha Ghat Baidyabati. It is located almost 39km away from Tarakeswar. A line of people wearing saffron-dyed clothing stretches for 39 km during that month. It is the longest and most extensive Mela in West Bengal.
