Naihati Municipality is among the oldest municipalities in the nation and was founded in 1869. It is also the place of birth of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay who was the composer of India's national anthem Vande Mataram. Naihati, Battala area is well-known for its fishing farming, raising of sweet water fish seeds from different genera, including Rohu Katla, Koi, Magur, Pabda, Silver Carp, Common Carp, and numerous others. It was initiated through a program of training through the Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI) and is which is now known as the Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA) situated in Kalyani. It's an initiative by the Indian Government, handled by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). Initiated by the Indian government, along with several famous scientists, and researchers under their guidance allowed them to ensure strict control on the production and conservation of different sweet water fishes.
