Sambhal is a district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It was officially announced as a district on 28 September 2011 and was previously known as Bhimnagar. Sambhal holds historical significance dating back to the 12th century. It is believed that two fierce battles were fought here between Prithviraj Chauhan, the last Hindu ruler of Delhi, and Ghazi Sayyad Salar Masud, the nephew of Mahmud Ghazni, the ruler of the Ghazni empire. Chauhan is said to have won the first battle while losing the second, but these events are considered legendary due to the lack of solid evidence. In the early 14th century, Qutub-ud-din Aibak, the first Muslim sultan of Delhi, seized Sambhal and added it to his empire. Later, Firoz Shah Tughlaq, another Delhi sultan, attacked Sambhal after a Hindu ruler from the region caused the death of many of his soldiers. Tughlaq established Muslim rule in the area to overpower the Hindu forces and captured the ruler, enslaving him for life. These events reflect Sambhal's rich yet turbulent past.
